This photo was taken at the last Schwendiman Reunion. Left to right it is my mom, Grandma, Grandpa and my dad. Grandpa has been an incredible example in my life. As his health has declined, the measure of what a great man he is has really hit me. I felt impressed to write a poem. The words don't seem enough, but it is a feeble attempt to give honor to a man who quietly and humbly has been an example of greatness.
In Honor of My Grandpa, Mark Schwendiman

As a little girl I waited eagerly in a cramped and crowded car
To see the signs for a turn we’d make, sometimes it seemed so far.
The turn would lead to a quiet farm that would normally go unseen,
But as years have passed I’ve realized, it’s value is supreme.

It’s not the rocks nor the gravel and dirt, but the history that ground holds
For my grandpa has known that simple farm since he was one day old.
His life has been a legacy, molded slowly through the years
He’s shaped his character daily through hard work, sweat, and tears.

In earlier times he would ride a horse to get from place to place
Fun times included baseball and friends, and maybe an occasional race.
Laughter was hushed when silently death took away his mother
At eight years old I’m sure he missed her, and loved her like no other.

Courageously he carried on with his Dad and siblings too,
Life on a farm yielded no time to rest, always plenty of work to do.
He grew and learned at school and home the value of work and play,
And learned from example to read and serve, and pray to God each day.

When school was done and the boy was grown, he accepted a mission call
To preach and teach in the western states, spreading hope and love for all.
But the growing pains from boy to man weren’t over just quite yet
As a call to war was issued, he mustered courage and bravely went.

The horrors of war’s frontline were everywhere to see,
With love of country and not of self, a hero he would be.
A love of freedom burst in his heart and burns within him still,
Words can’t express the debt we owe, or the gratitude we feel.

Returning home, he set his sights on family and farming
Who knew young Louise would grow up to find the neighbor boy so charming.
They married and made the farmhouse their home, and soon the children came,
Five daughters, and two sons were born to carry the Schwendiman name.

Losing baby Mark in infancy helped them lean on heaven’s grace
And trust in God’s unfailing care that he was in a better place.
Through it all hard work became the staple of each day,
With cows to milk and crops to grow they knew no other way.

The fruits of their labors they soon would see as success came their way
The children grew up and one by one got married and moved away.
A new season in life opened up for them, they traveled from shore to shore
Each mission served and new trip taken left them wanting to see more.

The family kept growing, ‘Grandma and Grandpa’ they soon became
And in a world that quickly changes, at their home so much stayed the same
Like the fresh air, serenity and memories made around the kitchen table
Where delicious food was blessed and games were played, whenever we were able.

And now it seems another season has quickly come upon us,
As time has aged the man we love , we know a hero has been among us.
In his quiet way he’s shown us all where true strength and courage live
Like him we can fight for each noble cause, and hard work and service give.

Grandpa, Dad, Husband and Brother, thanks for showing us the way.
We rejoice to know through the Saviors’ plan we’ll see you again one day.

Student Body Officer

Congratulations to Brock who made Student Body Officer at Tooele Junior High. Please note: (He won the election before nerd day. . ) ha, ha. . . He was also awarded the Student Of the Month award in September. Go, Brocky, Go!!

NERD Day

Whachu laughin at?

I know. . .pi equals the square root of the exponent divided by the . . (you get the idea)

So, it was "Spirit Week" at the school, and each day the kids got to dress up in some fun way. When Friday came around, and Brock had the opportunity to Nerd it up--he went full board. He kept us laughing all day. We had to laugh when he told us that the glasses REALLY DID help him see better. Maybe he should keep them. . . .

Pumpkin Walk

Last Friday, just the two younger kids and me were at home while the boys were camping (in the snow, no less). We decided to take a trip to the local pumpkin patch. Kenzie and Braydon were proud of their picks.

Tyler in All State Choir

Those 'gang signs' represent crescendo and decrescendo. .

TOO COOL for words. . .

Tyler and Stephanie, hydrating their vocal chords after a good workout.

Tyler had the awesome experience of participating in All-State Choir this year. They put on an amazing show, and Tyler learned a lot and had a ton of fun with his teacher and friends that participated.

First Day of School!

McKenzie is in Mrs. Baran's Fifth Grade Class. She loves that she gets to earn class 'money' for a job well done.

Braydon really loves his teacher, Mrs. Thomas. She is fun and patient with his wiggles. :)

It's hard to believe we only have 2 left in elementary school, but I was so glad they still thought it was 'cool' for Mom to walk them to school. After the big drop-off a lot of the local mom's went and celebrated our new-found freedom by going to breakfast at Jim's.

Colton's Birthday

The girls thought it would be really funny to give Colton a Barbie. He took the teasing pretty well, but before the night was over the boys let the dog rip poor Barbie apart.

Great group of friends!

August 18th marked the day that Colton officially became a teenager. We had a big friend party for him and then a family party. Colton's b-day wish was a rip-stick, and despite fears of him breaking his neck, he got one. We kept him guessing though by having him open his smaller gifts first...acting like that was 'it'.. before leading him on a treasure hunt for the grand finale.

Heather's Birthday

Braydon got all tangled up in the human rubber band we brought. He needed a little help getting untangled...but made us laugh as we watched him try.
Girls just wanna have fun . . .
One of Heather's best and longest running friends..
Boys, boys, boys~

Ok. . so it's catchup blog time for me again. Lots has happened since my last blogging session, but here are a few highlights. Heather had her 15th b-day on July 29th. She has been loving high school and playing volleyball and loves to spend time with her friends. She had a big party with a bunch of her friends. . we reserved the pavillion at a nearby church and had food and games. Here are some of the best pictures...

Good Things Utah!

This morning the YW took a trek to SLC to visit the local TV set of Good Things Utah. What a fun time. Highlights were seeing piano great Kurt Bestor, seeing all the behind the scene happenings, laughing and clapping and cheering 'til our hands hurt and taking pictures with 'the girls'. Mike McKay thought our Hadli Sorenson looked just like Miley Cyrus--so we had to get a pix of them together.

Scout Camp

Unfortunately, we missed Brock and Colton at the family reunion this year because they were off having their fun at Scout Camp. We are proud of their accomplishments. They both earned 6 complete merit badges. Brock was especially proud of the rifle shooting. . he said when he started he couldn't even hit the target paper, but after a few hours practice and learning to use the scope, he hit the target 5 times within a quarter-size range. Way to go, boys!

Schwendiman Reunion

One of my favorite things about summer is the chance we have to renew our relationships with extended family with our family reunion. This year my mom's side had a fabulous time at Squirrel Creek Ranch, near Ashton Idaho. Of course, the company was great, but the food, scenery, and activities were awesome, too. It was such a hot spot that I think every mosquito in the state showed up for the visit. We all have polka dot bites to show for it, but it was worth every itch! :) Thanks for a great time, family--here are some of our favorite photos.Dad and Grandpa were both gifted a new head of hair!

Grandma Schwendiman and Braydon

Mingling under the pavillion
Our family at Cave Falls. . what a pretty spot!

My Dad and Grandpa were gifted with full heads of hair!
They look pretty happy about it, don't you think?

Last Day Of School

Today was the last day of school, although I will admit it came pretty quickly for me! We celebrated with Mickey Mouse chocolate chip pancakes this morning. Everyone wanted to look their best, and I couldn't resist the chance to take everyone's snapshot. Here's a quick update on each of them. Good job on all your hard work kids!
Tyler had a fun first year in Show Choir and had a blast performing in the musical Grease. He is looking forward to Show Choir next year. His voice continues to change and mature--next year he will move from tenor to base.

Heather Michelle can't wait to move on to high school next year! She sang the national anthem with her good friend Sarah for their Jr. High commencement and also received a scholastic award for her good grades this year.
Colton and Brock are both moving on to Jr. High next year. They both love b-ball and are working hard on their scouting and school work. They both received superintendent's academic awards and are excited to move on to the big Jr. High world next year.
McKenzie has really excelled in reading this year and won an award for reading over 5,000 minutes! She is also a talented little artist!

Braydon worked really hard at his spelling and reading this year. He did an oral report on African safaris and wrote a book about turtles. He is excited to learn how to swim and ride a bike this summer!

Newest family member. .Meet Moka!

Aww, isn't she precious?

Hi everyone. So, the Schofield-Egan clan has a new addition. Scott brought home a 6 week old chocolate lab yesterday and I must admit that those big brown eyes are even intoxicating to me. She has been fun and is definitely still a baby. She loves lots of attention and to be held and pampered. Scott is looking forward to hunting and fishing trips and lots of long walks.

Cruise March 2008

So, it caught us by surprize, but when an invitation from Mom and Dad came to join them on a cruise at a DEAL, we couldn't pass it up. We had about 2 wks to prepare and pack, and before we knew it we had set said from Long Beach to Catalina Island, then Ensenada, Mexico.

Those cruising were my Mom and Dad, brothers Jeffrey and David, Brock and Colton, Scott and myself. When each of our kids turn 12, they have had the opportunity to take a special trip with either Mom or Dad. Colton and Brock took this trip together, and Brock actually celebrated his 12b-day on board. My Dad celebrated his 60th, and my brother David had his b-day, too. Needless to say, we ate lots of cake. :)

Sadie Hawkins

Hi everyone~

Ok, so it's been a while. :) Forgive my slacking, but I'm ready to post some updates and hopefully will find myself taking the time a little more often. Last weekend, Tyler went to the Sadie Hawkins dance with Sara Mellor. They had a good time, and I think they look pretty cute in their matching shirts. Heather posed w/ Tyler for this practice shot.

It's hard to believe that school will be out soon. The kids are all excited and counting down! Heather is away for 3 days for her outdoor survival class. She will be home this afternoon--and we will have the shower ready and waiting! Updates and pix of the other kids will be coming soon!
